The FD alumni basketball opening weekend is in the books and the games provided much excitement to those present at the FD gym known as “the Jungle”. The defending champion class of 2004 improved to 2-0 in the tournament thanks to a buzzer beating shot by Matt Leon Guerrero to defeat the class of 2008 by a score of 42-39.
After 2008 tied the game at 39 apiece, the inbounds pass was to Leon Guerrero with 4 ticks left on clock. Leon Guerrero dribbled up court and put up a “blue line” 32-foot prayer that was answered for the victory.
In the late game, the 4-time champion class of 2006 got vengeance against the class of 2012 behind Julius Yu’s 26 points with the 61-59 victory.
The class of 2010 is making a strong run at the title this year, winning all their games to improve to 3-0 for the tournament. 2010 is receiving strong play from starters Earvin Jose, Ashton Wong and Drew Eusebio as they demolished their completion.
The FD alumni basketball tournament fans were treated to a shootout Monday night. Yes, a shootout – in basketball. During the regular round robin games for the FD alumni tournament, overtime games are decided by 3-point shootouts from 5 members of each team. Instead of the traditional additional 4 minute overtime period, a shootout is played to keep the schedule of games on time.
After the class of 2013 and 2009 battled to a 53-all tie after regulation; a shootout was required.
Jose Terlaje made the first basket to open up the shootout for 2013 to go up 1-0. Terlaje’s bucket put pressure on the class of 2009 with Kevin Javier, Dom Sablan and Stephen Gatewood each missing from downtown to hand the class of 2013 the “W”.
Allan Santos from the class of 2013 hit the “go ahead” 3-pointer during the shootout to clinch the 2-0 victory.
