BOXERS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

The Guam International Boxing Council ended 2012 on a good note by holding its fourth amateur boxing tournament Saturday night at the Guam Sports Complex.

Not a lot of people can play two sports in one day; then again not a lot of people are like Will Williams. Before fighting in the ring Williams was out on the gridiron earning a victory for the Raiders in the BFL. One would assume that he would be tired by the time he came to the tournament, but with the way he fought you couldn’t tell that he played football earlier.

As the main event of a fight card that consisted over 10 fighters, Williams and his opponent Keevin Camacho lit up the ring as both fighters excited the crowd with jabs, body shots, and combinations of punches.

“My plan was to use the ring and my athleticism,” said Williams. And so he did. In a mismatched fight, Williams used his height, speed, and reach to his advantage in the first round by landing a flurry of head punches that sent Camacho to the ropes a couple of times. At one point, Camacho turned away from the ropes, leaving himself open to a straight right to the face.

The second round saw more of the same from Williams as he continued his assault. However, midway through the round Camacho began to show some life as he landed counter shots to the body and head of Williams who was beginning to look fatigued. Using his momentum Camacho came out  strong in the third round landing combinations to Williams’ head and body using his strength to tire Williams out. But towards the end of the fight it looked about even with both boxers looking tired and neither really landing any punches.

In the end it was Williams named the victor by split decision, thus ending a successful night and year for the Guam Boxing Federation.

OTHER FIGHTS:

Adrienne Francisco (DLX) def. Cinto Peredo (Comquest) by unanimous decision

In one of the more exciting bouts of the evening, the two youngsters battled it out for three rounds filled with energy. Francisco dominated early on in the first round with his hard punches to Peredo’s body and head. At one point, Peredo was cornered on the ropes which Francisco took advantage of. The second round, however, belonged to Peredo as he answered Francisco with body shots of his own and jabs to the face. By the third round both boxers were giving it all they had, both answering each punch with a counter and making the bout more electrifying. Francisco would go on to win the match by unanimous decision.

Stan Ibanez (Countershot) def. Dylan Mobel (Ultimate Martial Arts) by split decision

Dylan Mobel had this fight under control for the first two rounds, landing body shots and using his big right hand to over-power Ibanez for most of the match. Ibanez landed a few shots to the body and the head, but it was not until the third round where he took over the match delivering body shots to a fatigued Mobel; Mobel was so tired that he laid himself on the canvas before the match ended. By doing that he lost himself points and the match as Ibanez took the bout by split decision.
