The boys, and girl, of the Southern Dolphins football team made their 2013 IIAAG season debut against the streaking FD Friars after having to forfeit their first two games of the season. The Dolphin’s momentum after receiving the opening kick quickly shifted to the Friars after turning the ball over on their first offensive play.
The Friar offense looked as sharp as ever in the big 44-0 win.
Friar quarterback Tyler Okiyama threw for 94 yards and three touchdowns playing just a little over one full quarter. Okiyama missed his first two throws but then completed eight straight before resting in the second half. The running attack dominated the night with FD getting 156 total yards on the ground and three touchdowns, with Rocco Flores leading the way with three carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.
FD Friars’ Tyler Okiyama is McDonald’s Player of the Game.
“I give the credit to my offensive line and my receivers for catching the ball. The line was blocking good today so I had a lot of time in the pocket. We try and mix things up and confuse the defense,” stated Okiyama on the teams overall offensive performance.
The Dolphins showed heart by playing hard on every single down as if the score was zero-zero. The FD offense was just too much to handle for the Dolphins, who also managed to display good sportsmanship through out the game.
Dolphins kick returner Jaythen Conway officially got the game started with a 30-yard return that had the Southern football fans roar for the first time all season. Southern quarterback Frank Cruz tried to ride the early momentum on the next play by throwing a bomb to one of his receivers, only to get picked off by Friar ball hawk Roy Taimanglo. That was the only pass attempt for the Dolphins all game.
FD then got two big runs by Albert Johnston on the following drive to go up 7-0. Johnston finished with three carries for 46 yards and one touchdown.
Friars Joshua Miranda sacked Cruz in the end zone for a safety which opened the flood gates for the Friar offense.

Okiyama then hit Nicolas Aglubat twice in a row, including a 5-yard touchdown pass. The Dolphins fumbled on the following play which set up a Okiyama for a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bryton Cepeda. Ricky Brown would then catch a touchdown pass from Okiyama before the half to go up 30-0.
Flores opened the third quarter on a 49-yard touchdown run to extend the Friar lead. A running touchdown by Brown in the fourth quarter finalized the score.
Conway led the Dolphins with 21 yards rushing while Cruz led the defense with three tackles and a forced fumble. Romeo Teodosio led FD in tackles with four. Friars kicker Brian Leon Guerrero is becoming as sure footed as high school kickers come, going 6 of 6 on his PAT’s for the game, missing just one kick all season due to it being blocked.
This win improves FD’s winning streak to (3-0) which sets up a big game between the also undefeated Guam High Panthers next Saturday. Okiyama and the Friars are just focusing on what they have to do and are not concerned with an undefeated record. “We are approaching it like any other game. We’re going to practice hard this week and get our heads straight.”
