The weather could not be any more perfect with the sun shining and the skies clear as the afternoon was filled with intense boxing matches over at the Beach Bar in Tumon hosted by the Guam International Boxing Council. And to make the afternoon even better, there was a double main event with a Cuba vs. Guam vs. Saipan mix.

In the main event, it was Cuba vs. Guam in the mens division light heavyweight class of 155 pounds. And although Guam’s Dorris Green represented our island very well, it was Cuba’s Rick Hernandez who came out on top by split decision to take home the trophy.

“I had a lot of nerves coming in to this match,” said Hernandez. “But I’ve seen these guys fight from their gym and a majority of them would rush their guys in as hard as they can. So my plan was to weather that storm in the beginning, just get as many counter-punches as I can to tire him out, then get him back when I had the chance to land some punches.”

And it was just that. In the first round, Green went straight into the offensive laying heavy hits on Hernandez. But coming in to the second round, Green looked a little burnt and Hernandez took advantage of the situation and picked up his aggression. The third round was just as intense as the first two with both competitors going back and forth. As the last bell rang, it was Hernandez who had his hand raised as the victor of the match.

“I was extremely nervous mainly because I’m the crowd’s enemy,” commented Hernandez on his pre-game jitters, “But I just wanted to be happy throughout the match, smile at the crowd and have fun. But the crowd here is great, the island is beautiful, and the people are great as well. I hope to spend more time here on the island and keep training as much as I can.”

The other main event of the afternoon was the Junior Division bantamweight class of 115 pounds, and it was an exhilarating event with the young 15 year-old Guamanian, Adrienne Francisco, beating his older opponent, 17 year-old AJ Aldan of Saipan, by unanimous decision.

“I feel I’ve performed well, but there are still some things I need to work on, like my endurance for one,” said Francisco.“And I also give props to my opponent, he fought hard and he just wouldn’t go down, which is respectful.”
