The 2021 Senior Oceania Weightlifting Championships is midway through it’s completion with four of Guam’s athletes competing online.
Jacinta Sumagaysay competed on Friday in the 59kg category winning gold!
“All the hard work and dedication despite the obstacles I’ve encountered, especially during this pandemic, it feels good to bring home a gold medal for Guam and to be called an Oceania Champion,” said Sumagaysay.
Thursday got off to a strong, though unfortunate start for Guam with Nicola Lagatao completing all her lifts to what should have been a gold medal for the 45kg competitor. Due to a bad internet connection from the impending tropical storm, the officials gave Lagatao a ‘no lift’ for her clean & jerk which denied her the official title.
“Nicola is still the 2021 Senior Champion in our eyes,” said coach Edgar Molinos.
Armie Almazan was scheduled to lift at 9 am Saturday morning, but had to pull out of the competition for personal reasons.
David Bautista competed Saturday afternoon placing 4th in his division.
Still to compete is Brittney Pereda in the 87+kg Sunday morning at 9 am.
