The 2023-2024 IIAAG High School Bowling League named its first ever MVP honorees with Kamilah Leones from JFK and Riel Brantley from Father Duenas taking the top honors.
Boys MVP Riel Brantley (FD)
Both players ended the regular season with the high average honors, winning the MVP votes in the coaches meeting held last Thursday.
Leones, last year’s All-Island girls individual champion, bowled her highest set before leaving off-island for vacation in Meet 5. Despite not having a complete team, Leones bested fellow First Team players Eriana Ada from Academy and Paulina Yoon from Harvest.
Brantley was a surprise MVP winner this season coming out of nowhere to win the honors. The freshman from FD was supposed to play golf for the Friars but moved from the course to the bowling center when the golf season was canceled.
The All-Island individual champions and the team champions will be determined on Thursday at 2 pm at Central Lanes. There is much at stake on Thursday with the individual champion to be determined via match play after three games played. The second vs. third seed will play in match one with the winner playing the top seed for the individual champion.
The team scores will also count with the top four scores from each school earning points to the team championship.
FD/Academy lead the regular season
Brantley helped the Friars to an undefeated season (6-0) with a deep team composed of fellow first-teamer Kyle Lindsey and second team player Aaron Hernandez.
Last year’s All-Island boys champion, Parker Ashland, will be gunning for a back-to-back individual title with a strong team backing him with from Harvest.
The Academy Cougars look to repeat as team champions with first-team players Ada and Alexis Leon Guerrero leading the way. The Cougars finished the season 6-0 but won a very close match to the Eagles led by Paulina Yoon.
The championship is up for grabs with every team in the hunt with a three game sprint.
