In a game that had no baring in the playoff picture, the GW Geckos earned the #2 seed in the ISA Football League semifinals with a 14-0 win over the Southern High Dolphins Friday night at the GW Field.
Both teams came in with 5-1 records heading into the last regular season weekend. Knowing they will face each other once again in the semifinals, the only thing on the line was who will be 2nd seed and who will be 3rd seed. The two teams will face off once again Saturday night in the second semifinal game with more implications on the line.
Meanwhile, the Guam High Panthers clinched the 4th seed and have the unenviable task of taking on the unbeaten FD Friars in Friday night’s other semifinals after beating the JFK Islanders 28-7.
GECKOS BLANK DOLPHINS
Answering the question of ‘who’s the next best team in the league?’, the Geckos’ stout defense once again came up big against the upstart Dolphins, pitching a shutout led by star linebacker Rayn Rios.
Offensively, GW quarterback QB Gumataotao connected with K’Rai Materne for a 15-yard score in the opening quarter to put the Geckos on the board.
Rios added a red-zone scoring run in the third quarter to add some cushion to the lead. Eduardo Whitman converted both PATs.
OKKODO FORFEIT
It was announced earlier Friday that the Okkodo Bulldogs have forfeited their Saturday afternoon game against the FD Friars. This makes it the fourth straight year that the Bulldogs have forfeited against the Friars.
The lone remaining game of the regular season that has no playoff impact is Saturday night’s Tiyan Titans vs Sanchez Sharks.
