IIAA MIDDLE SCHOOL BOWLING CROWNS CHAMPIONS

Sawada/Charfauros claim All-Island championship crown

PRESS RELEASE – The 2025 IIAAG Middle School Bowling held its All-Island individual finals Monday afternoon at Central Lanes with the top 30 boys and girls taking the lanes for the coveted crown.

After 3 games of preliminary round play, the two top seeds prevailed in the match play finals to win the title. In the boy’s division, St. Anthony’s Lyo Sawada defeated Andersen Middle School’s Nathan Caasi 193-159 to claim the boys singles title. 

In the girls division, SIFA affiliate Aubreale Charfauros bowled a 207 game against St Anthony’s Kristine Lanuza to win the girls singles title. Charfauros led the field a 467 series, followed by teammate Tasilynn Reyes’ 449 series. Reyes saved her best performance for the all-island, bowling her personal best 167 game to earn a spot in the match play. 

Lanuza defeated Reyes in the girls’ semi-final round, sparing in the 9th and 10th frames to secure a spot in the finals against Charfauros. Lanuza was the third seed with a 396 series.

Caasi entered the match play as a 2-seed, bowling a 3-game series of 531. Caasi and Sawada were battling each other during the preliminary rounds to determine the top seed. Sawada pulled away in the third game to earn the top seed with a 553 series. 

St. Anthony’s Dylan Cruz bowled a series 470 to earn a spot in the match play. SIFA’s Justin Bersamin nearly made the match play with a 464 series. 

Caasi stamped his ticket to the finals with a season high game of 236 against Cruz in the semifinals. Caasi started the final match with a double to take an early lead versus Sawada. Sawada capitalized on a Caasi pocket 7-10 split in the 10th frame to win the for Sawada who ended up punching out in the 10th frame for the victory.

All-Island Day 2 team event

After a short 5 week season, all the marbles were on the line with the SIFA Manta Rays girls team entering the event as a top seed and the mighty St. Anthony Raiders setting the standard as the team to beat in the boys division.

The Raider boys team continued their dominance and finished their match play undefeated to win the first ever bakers team format championship.

The girls division witnessed an upset victory with the third seed Dominican Catholic School Veritas defeating the top seed SIFA Manta Rays 2-0 in match play to win the championship.

The Raiders took down the Andersen Dragons in match play 2-0, anchored by all-island individual champion Lyo Sawada. The Dragons had a chance to win the first game in a best of three game format but dropped the first match 167-166.

St. Anthony took off early in match two, with the team of four players combining for a turkey in the front end of the game to win the second match convincingly.

The Veritas came out hot early in their championship match play and won the first game by 30 pins. SIFA started the second game off early and took an early lead.

The Veritas answered with three strikes in a row in the 6th, 7th, and 8th frames to pull ahead for good.

The season ends for middle school bowling, and this is the first time the new baker format has been introduced. The two-day all-island tournament featured the individual championships on Monday and the bakers team event on Tuesday. A total of 140 players participated in the league.
