LAI, AU YEUNG TAKE BRONZE

The first ever Guam Masters Games kicked off Monday morning with the best local tennis players competing in the doubles tournament at the Hilton tennis court.

After an early morning and late afternoon full of elimination games, George Lai and Benson Au Yeung earned bronze in the 40+ men’s doubles tournament after defeating Tony Camacho and John Sanchez in two sets, 6-0, 6-2.

The game started early with each team feeling each other out. But after a few serves, Lai and Au Yeung got their rhythm going and aced their way to a dominating 6-0 first set win.

“We just wanted to play our usual game – relaxed, having fun, and playing to win,” stated Lai on their game plan for the match.

Camacho and Sanchez knew they needed the second set in order to have a chance for the bronze. Although they let the first game get away from them, they managed to turn the tables around to put their first point on the board off a good hit by Sanchez following a short rally, leaving the second set score at one apiece.

Lai and Au Yeung competed even harder and managed to take the next three games by demonstrating good returns and placement of their shots. After a first game that was won almost entirely on serves, this game featured more rallies. This began to play in Camacho and Sanchez’ favor as they managed to take game six after a hard smash by Camacho, leaving the score 4-2.

Lai, being put at the service line, went back to what he’s good at and served up three straight aces to take an easy game seven. Au Yeung made the eighth game just as quick as he gave no chance for Camacho and Sanchez to score by smashing each serve with no return, putting the score at 40-love. With the match on the line, both teams gave an exciting rally but another smash by Au Yeung went unreturned, giving his team the game, set, and match along with the bronze medal.

The gold and silver medal games are set to continue on Wednesday at the Hilton tennis court.

BASEBALL:
Under beautiful skies the Guam Masters Games Baseball Tournament kicked off with the Bank of Guam A’s taking on the ACI Masters at 4pm and Team Yamaha taking on Team Saipan at 7pm.

Behind solid defense and timely hitting the ACI Masters took the first game over the Bank of Guam A’s  16-7 with the Player of the Game Bruce Fejeran going 3 for 3 at the plate and picking up the win on the mound.
Team Yamaha  20    Saipan Masters  0
Team Yamaha used a big 15 run 5th inning  in their matchup with Team Saipan and won via the 10 run mercy rule 20-0 in 5 innings.  Herb Hattig picked up the shutout in 5 innings of work and Keith Hattig picked up Player of the Game going 4-4 with three triples and four rbi.
“Great first day of games!” states Justin Bennett, Guam Amateur Baseball Secretary/League Coordinator.  The action continues Tuesday 4pm with Team Yamaha taking on the Bank of Guam A’s and at 7pm with ACI Masters taking on the Tamuning Twins.
TENNIS:
Young Min Jee defeated Monty May (6-3, 6-3).  David Lai overcame Preston Antonini (6-2, 6-0), Khay Sung beat Naoto Ibaraki (6-0, 6-0), Richard Leon won over Rick Ninete (6-1, 6-3), Joven Acosta handed Jerry Benavente a defeat (6-0, 6-2), Jeff Bristol beat Ray Miranda (Walkover), Ernie Galito defeated Albert Cayanan (6-4, 6-1), Torgun Smith won over John Sanchez (6-0, 6-0), and Young Park overcame Reed Sasamoto (Walkover).  The first medal played was for BRONZE, which was won by Benson AuYeung and George Lai in the Mens 40 Doubles Division defeating Tony Camacho and John Sanchez (6-0, 6-2).
Games continue today and tomorrow (9/11 and 9/12) at the Hilton Tennis Courts for Tennis at 7am – 10am and 3pm – 7pm, Leo Palace Golf Course for Golf at 11am, Leo Palace Baseball Stadium for Baseball at 4pm – 10pm, and the UOG Fieldhouse for Basketball at 6pm – 9pm.
