The St. Thomas Aquinas Lions are now the top dogs in High School Golf following their win over the defending champion Father Duenas Friars Thursday afternoon at the Admiral Nimitz Golf Course in Radio Barrigada.  After tying in their first meeting, the Lions soared with a 3-1 victory.

“This win puts us in first place, we haven’t had a loss, but we still got a lot of work cut out for us,” admitted Lions coach Teddy Gogue.  “We’re just trying to do our best, I just ask the kids to give it 100% every time they play. That’s all I care whether it’s win or lose, to have fun and enjoy.”

The Lions were able to blank the Friars in three of the four matchups.  Freshman Teddy Gogue, Jr. defeated Friars stand-out Ricardo Terlaje two holes to nothing.  Senior Spencer Steffy shut out FD’s Koby Aiphios 3-0.  Lastly, Ryan Gogue beat his cousin Eric Tenorio 1-0.

FD’s lone matchup win came off key golfer Redge Camacho defeating Terence Camacho 3-2.  Redge took the lead early winning the first three holes.  However, Terence was able to cut the lead winning two holes of his own.

The Lions now sit in first place at 4-0-2 while the Friars sit in second at 4-1-1.

St. John’s vs. Guam High School

The St. John’s Knight swept the Guam High Panthers 4-0 in the boys’ matchups and 2-0 in the girls’ matchups.

“I was very happy with the overall performance.  A lot of my kids have been playing for a long time, and some of there [Guam High’s] kids are newer. And so it’s actually kind of nice to see the new kids play and do quite well for their team,” said Knights coach Bob Kelley.

In the boys’ matchups, St. John’s Devin Hua defeated Austin Gamboa giving up only one hole.  Kevin Oberiano swept all holes over Alex Ashton.  Haruka Aoki defeated Nick Moore 2-0.  Lastly, Kurang Jin Lim defeated Skylar Bagwell 2-1

In the female matchups, Lady Knights’ Angella Chang won 4-0 over Guam High’s Chloe Gadsden.  Regine Ong also won her matchup over Caylin Hubble of the Panthers.
