PRESS RELEASE – The brave Guam Football Association Soccer Moms League players have overcome first-match jitters and returned for a second week of play at the GFA National Training Center.

“The league’s been good – I like that we get the chance to get together with our soccer family,” said Merizo-resident Liana Cruz after motioning toward her Heat Wave teammates. “It’s a fun league, and if we have another one like this, I’ll definitely try out again for the team.

“After two weeks of playing, I think I’m alright on defense. It’s a lot of running –I’m waking up muscles that have been sleeping ‘since ever since’,” jokingly added Cruz, whose daughter Hailey Anderson had played a few seasons ago for the Southern Heat club in the Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League.

The Heat Wave, made up primarily of relatives of youth players for the Southern Heat, played a match against the Blue Ballers. Eight other teams also continued play – the Wolverines Båsta Move Blue against the Goal Diggers, the Islanders Wrecked Havoc against Victorious Secrets, Wolverines Pika Mommas against the Supersonics, and the Power Puff Moms against the Islanders Wrecking Women. The teams will play two more weeks before the conclusion of the league. Matches begin at 3 p.m. on Sundays on the lower turf pitch and the mini turf pitch. There is no admission fee to watch.

On the upper turf pitch, the Doosan Lady Crushers extend their unbeaten streak to four games in the Bud Light Women’s 11-A-Side Soccer League Fall Season with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Paintco Lady Strykers. Andrea Odell scored the eventual game winner in the 18th minute.

In other matches, Guam Shipyard defeated the Lady Rovers 3-1 led by Destiny Castro’s brace. Erica Quichocho scored Shipyard’s other goal. Pauline Toves scored the Lady Rovers’ lone goal after taking a pass from Rhoda Bamba to the goal for the score in the second half.

In the night’s late match, Quality Distributors held off Hyundai 6-4. Paige Surber led all scorers with four goals and teammate Kayla Kinney knocked in two. Olivia Flores, Shana Spindel, Ashley Besagar and Honoka Recella each scored once for Hyundai.

The 11-A-Side Women’s League continues Sunday with the final matches of the regular season before taking a weeklong break before playoffs. The Lady Strykers will play Guam Shipyard at 3 p.m., followed by the Lady Rovers against Hyundai at 5 p.m. The Lady Crushers take on Quality Distributors at 7 p.m.
