WESTERN PACIFIC BASEBALL SERIES STARTS UP

The Guam Baseball Academy kicks off the first ever Western Pacific 18U Baseball Series this week.

PRESS RELEASE- Guam Amateur Baseball Association and Guam Baseball Academy will be hosting Annual Western Pacific Series. The 2014 Western Pacific Series is scheduled with the visiting Hong the 1st Kong Select Team in the 14-18 year age group.

Three Guam Baseball Academy Teams made up of Guam’s elite players kicked off the tournament this past Saturday and Sunday at the Leo Palace Baseball Stadium in preparation to challenge the strong team from Hong Kong. Tournament continues Friday August 22 7 pm with Guam Red taking on the Hong Kong 18U National Team.

Game one featured team Guam Brandt Blue facing off against team Guam Red to kick off the WPS 18U tournament. Guam Red would take advantage of 4 errors to score four runs in the bottom of the last inning to complete a huge comeback to take game one by a score of 10-9.

Guam Brandt Blue defense couldn’t hold a 4 run lead going into the bottom of the 8th pitching performance by starter Jacob Concepcion. Guam Red Kel Francisco would score the winning run after a throwing error allowed him to come around the bases. Of the ten runs scored by Guam Red only one run was earned.

Auron Eclavea got the win for Guam Red going 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing only one earned run. Mike Concepcion went 3 for 3 with two runs and two rbi to lead offense and pick up Strike Zone Player of the Game.

Brandt Blue squad catcher Kyle Martinez was 2-2, 3BB, 4R and AJ Benevente was 4-4, BB, HR, 2R, RBI.

Despite getting the loss Guam Royal starter Jacob Concepcion went 7 2/3 innings with 8 strikeouts and allowed only five hits while walking seven batters.

Guam Red fall to 0-1 in the tournament and will welcome Hong Kong to Guam on August 22, Friday at 7 pm in their first game.

Strike Zone POG: Vicente Quenga 7IP, 3H, 0R, 7K, 3BB and Isaiah Cruz 1-2, 2R, 2SB, great defense at 3rd

In game two of the tournament team Guam Brandt Blue got another great pitching performance out of starter Vicente Quenga and this time their defense was in support as they shut out team Guam Navy 5-0 on Sunday night at Leo Palace Park.

Quenga was lights out allowing only three hits over seven innings to blank Guam Navy. Vandrew Naputi would close out the final two innings to preserve the shutout for team Guam Brandt Blue.

Team Guam Navy starter Darren Tedtaotao matched Quenga frame to frame not allowing a hit or baserunner until the 4th inning when Tristan Aguerro would break up the no hit bid with a line single to left.

Team Guam Brandt Blue would chase Tedtaotao in the 6th inning scoring three runs with Javin Delgado capping the rally with a long drive to center for a two rbi double to put Guam Brandt Blue on top 3-0.

Quenga picks up the win going seven inning alowing only three hits with seven strikeouts to share Strike Zone Player of the Game with Isaiah Cruz would was 1 for 2 with two runs and two stolen bases for team Guam Brandt Blue who even their record at 1-1 in the tournament.

Ethan De la Cruz was 1-2 with two walks for team Guam Navy who fall to 0-1.
