The National Guard Team of the Month for the month of December was awarded Tuesday afternoon to the FD Friars Wrestling team after going 14-0 on the season while also winning the schools first ever wrestling championship at the All-Island meet.

“It’s been a blessing for this team, but I’d be remised not to mention that it’s been a cumulative effort over the past four years. The parents of the kids, Father Jeff, the support from everybody and all the hard work and dedication that these boys have put in have helped this grow. I’ve just been blessed with the opportunity to manage this group,” said Friars head coach Terry Debold on what the season meant to him.

The Friars burned the midnight oil during the All-Island Wrestling meet to reel in the title over the GW Geckos. Part of the team was captain Cyril Maravilla, who finished his sophomore, junior and now senior year undefeated.

“As a team captain I had to instil a goal in their minds and that this season was our season because we have the support system, we have the coaching staff and we have the right guys and talents. It was just a matter of working hard and grinding hard in practice and for me as a leader to guide where their mindset and focus is,” said Cyril.
