2017 MARIANAS OPEN TO FEATURE STACKED BRACKETS

PRESS RELEASE – MANGILAO, GU – Thousands of people from all corners of the globe visit our island to feel the warmth of sun, the tropical breeze that run from Yigo to Malesso, to take a dip in our pristine waters, and enrich themselves in our rooted culture. In just a couple of days, our community and visitors will enjoy a world-class tournament, with elite competitors. The Marianas Open is Guam’s premier and longest running Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in the entire Pacific, which will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017.

This upcoming Marianas Open will feature a stacked and exciting bracket with competitors coming from Brazil, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Japan, the mainland U.S.A, and our beautiful island of Guam. Jiu-jitsu enthusiasts and fans of the martial art will not need a round-trip ticket to compete or witness world-class champions, as these champions will be competing at Father Duenas Memorial School Phoenix Center.

Last year’s Marianas Open Champion, Felipe Pena will return to defend his crown, after defeating 2015’s champion, Keenan Cornelius. In honor of the Tenth Season of the Mariana’s Open, a total cash prize of $17,000 will be given respectively, and a black belt champion will have an opportunity to win up to $10,000. Jared Weiner (USA) and Makoto Aramaki (Japan) will face head-to-head in a Masters Division Super Fight, in which 100% of its net winnings will be donated to Teiya Camille Van Meter to support her battle against brain cancer. The first black belt bout is set to begin at 11:00am.

Previous Marianas Open tournaments have brought in BJJ World Champions from all around the world is has been broadcasted internationally, exposing our island’s high level of BJJ in our local competitors, backed by the support of our partners, SPPC 76 Circle K and Guam Windward Memorial. With a stacked bracket, the Marianas Open expects to draw in a wider audience to witness the event live, and invite worldwide spectators to tune in on live stream coverage by FloGrappling.
