A wet and rainy Liberation Day morning did not dampen the moods of any of the runners partaking in the 37th GRC Liberation Mile. Derek Mandell cruised to a first place finish in the male division with a time of 4:45. Meanwhile first-time race participant Kristy Orr finished on top in the female division with a time of 6:30.
“This race is always unique in a way, with it being on Liberation, it’s a way for us to honor what the people of Guam went through during the war,” said Mandell on what makes sets this event apart from other races.
Mandell edged out Ryan Matienzo for the top finish in the male division. Matienzo displayed his pride during the race by carrying the Guam and American flags along the race route. 15 year-old Brandon Miranda finished third in the male division.
“This is my first time running the event and the thing that sets it apart for me is just the atmosphere of the crowd with all the cheerleaders and everyone celebrating Liberation Day it was a really fun experience,” said Orr.
Orr placed first in the female division followed by Anastaoa Uncangco and rounding out the top three was Maddie Dolan.
