The FD Friars and GW Geckos officially tipped off the IIAAG Boys Basketball season Saturday night with the lone game opening the season. The Friars picked up the win 69-52 after a strong 17-point performance from Tony Quinene.
Quinene was efficient from deep going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Friar teammate Christian Taitano added 15 points off the bench. Gecko Shelby Meeks also scored a team-high 17 points and freshman guard Josh Sebastian scored 12.
The Geckos led at the half with head coach Eddie Pelkey upset with his teams first half performance. Pelkey inserted Raymond ‘RJ’ Castro off the bench and Castro’s energy made for a quick six points with hustle on the defensive end to spark the Friars to pull away in the second half.
