GUAM ATHLETES TAKE IRONMAN CAIRNS

Huge accomplishment for Ironman completion

Published on

Guam Triathlon Federation — Seven from Guam travelled to Cairns to race in IM Cairns and IM Cairns 70.3. (https://www.ironman.com/im-cairns-course). Gerry Cruz, Craig Weymouth, Michele Santos, Mel Torre, Dean Soriano and Rudy Palencia did the full IM and Thelma Soriano did the Half Ironman. Torre was the lone athlete who did not complete the course because of cramping. All others accomplished their goal!

IM Cairns is a 140.2 mile triathlon. Starts with a 2.4-mile open water swim in cold and rough water. Then, you mount your bike to begin a 112-mile ride through the northern part of Cairns along the coast until you make your way back to the main city to begin a full marathon (26.2 miles). The IM 70.3 is half the distance on a similar course. This event is the Asian Championship and hosted several pros and age group participants trying for a spot in the World Championship in Kona, HI.

They have trained tirelessly for months on end, along with their demanding jobs, family obligations, injuries, and having to sometimes train at 3 in the morning. Inspiring is an understatement!
