Guam national basketball player Jia Peters is leading her high school squad, the St. John’s Knights , to a fast start in the Interscholastic Girls Basketball League.
Peters was on fire with 27 points and 10 rebounds Friday night in the Knights’ 53-38 win over the defending ISA champion Sanchez Sharks on their home floor.
The inside tandem of center Amara Del Carmen contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for St. John’s. The duo are returning First Team All-Island selectees for IIAAG when they were sophomores a year ago with Peters garnering MVP honors. Expect big things from the pair the rest of the season.
St. John’s led from start to finish, slowly pulling away after a tight first quarter 16-12 lead.
Celine Angeles was the lone Shark in double digits with 11 points, while Bree Simina helped out with eight. Sanchez shocked the 2023 ISA league by taking the title last year.
“We are definitely glad to be playing with public schools again,” St. John’s head coach Fred Peters said, talking about the split of the private and public schools for the last six years.
St. John’s is now 3-0 and Sanchez falls to 1-1. The Knights take on the defending champion St. Paul Warriors on Monday in a big matchup.
