International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach made his return to Guam to attend the Oceania National Olympic Committee’s (ONOC) General Assembly.

The assembly took place at the Nikko Hotel with Governor Lou Leon Guerrero opening the assembly with welcoming remarks: “This assembly is a momentous occasion, not only for our region, but for the global Olympic community, and we are proud hosts,” said Governor Leon Guerrero.

Bach, who is set to retire as President of the IOC in the summer, made an opening speech in front of representatives from Oceania.

“In the near future, next month to be exact, my time as IOC President will come to an end,” said President Bach. “So it is with great emotion that I address you today for the last time in this room”.

Bach spoke of his experiences in different Island Nations during his tenure as President. “Throughout all these years, I have been fortunate to witness your unity, your community spirit, your solidarity, and your friendship”.

“The strength of our friendship and the wonderful spirit of community is what defines Oceania – these memories, I will always cherish. Oceania has and always will have, a special place in my heart,” said Bach.

The body elected Palau’s Baklai Temengil as president, the first female to hold that position.

Guam National Olympic Committee President Ricardo Blas retains his position as ONOC Secretary General, a position he has held since 2009.
