Siblings making Guam proud

Published on

Akemi-Maria Pangelinan, daughter of Angelo and Stephanie Pangelinan from Chalan Pago/Mangilao, Guam, captured gold at the 2025 Brasileiro Jiu-Jitsu Crianças Championship. Representing Team Inevat Jiu-Jitsu, Akemi delivered a dominant performance with sharp technique and fierce determination, guided by World Champions, Professor Samuel Nagai and Professor Matheus Gabriel.

Her impressive showing marks a powerful statement for Guam’s presence in international jiu-jitsu, proving that dedication and heart can take athletes from a small island to the top of the podium in one of the sport’s biggest events.

Adding to the family’s celebration, her older brother, Ryu Angelo Pangelinan, also made the podium with a strong third-place finish in his division. The match ended in a tie and went to a referee’s decision, despite Ryu having back control and a rear-naked choke. Together, the Pangelinan siblings continue to represent Guam with pride, courage, and excellence on the mats.

Ryu and Akemi-Maria Pangelinan represent Guam in Rome.

“Akemi’s gold medal is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and the passion she brings to the sport,” said her father and coach, Angelo Pangelinan. “Watching both Akemi-Maria and Ryu Angelo perform on this international stage is a deeply humbling experience, reminding us of the beauty of dedication and grace.”

The Pangelinan family and Team Inevat Jiu Jitsu extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported their journey.
