AGUIGUI LEADS TITANS THROUGH QUARTERS

top four seeds move to semifinals

The IIAAG/ISA Boys Volleyball League quarterfinals concluded Saturday night with all higher seeds winning on their respective home courts.

Quarterfinal Results

  – #1 Father Duenas def. #8 Simon Sanchez (25-15, 26-24, 27-25)
  – #2 St. John’s def. #7 Harvest (25-17, 25-17, 25-9)
  – #3 Tiyan def. #6 GW (25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22)
  – #4 Notre Dame def. #5 JFK (25-22, 25-20, 25-15)

Player of the Game: Tiyan’s Nathan Aguigui

The matchup between the Tiyan Titans and the GW Geckos was the only four-set battle of the night. Tiyan’s Nathan Aguigui led his team with 19 kills, while GW’s Ifirston Kinemary recorded 14 kills and four service aces.

After splitting the first two sets, Tiyan took the third 25-23 following a late kill by Travis Barcinas and a GW net error. In the fourth set, GW held a 21-17 lead before the Titans, led by setter Leonidas Hayashi and Aguigui, closed on an 8-2 run to secure the victory.

Upcoming Schedule
The semifinals will take place this Tuesday at 6:00 PM:

  – #4 Notre Dame at #1 Father Duenas
  – #3 Tiyan at #2 St. John’s

The Tiyan vs. St. John’s match is a highly anticipated rematch of a five-set regular-season thriller won by the Knights. “We need to come into that game hungry and feed off of our supporters,” said Aguigui.

Aguigui said that GW played a great game and they had good communication throughout the contest. Now, the focus goes to the their next game against the Knights. 

“We need to be more focused and mentally ready against St John’s,” added Aguigui. 

GW’s Ian Mansfield had a game-high four blocks while Ezekiel Chargualaf contributed six kills for the Geckos. Barcinas had six kills for the Titans. 

Winners of the semifinals will advance to the championship game on Thursday at Okkodo High School. The two losing teams will play the consolation game for third place to open the night at Okkodo.
