PRESS RELEASE – The Guam Marianas Open organization proudly announces the official launch of the Guam Marianas Dumau, a gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament set for June 20, 2026.
With the inaugural event now just five weeks away, anticipation is rapidly building for the newest installment in Guam’s premier Jiu-Jitsu tournament circuit.
For nearly two decades, the Guam Marianas Open has traditionally hosted two signature annual events: the internationally recognized Guam Marianas Open International in the fall and the Guam Copa de Marianas at the beginning of the year. Both tournaments have become cornerstone events within the Pacific grappling community, helping establish Guam as one of the region’s emerging hubs for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition.
Now, following unprecedented growth throughout Guam’s grappling scene and overwhelming demand from athletes, academies, and supporters, the organization is officially expanding its Guam tournament series with the introduction of a third major local event — the Guam Marianas Dumau.
The launch comes during a historic stretch of momentum for the Guam Marianas Open brand. Since last year, every Guam Marianas Open event has experienced record-breaking participation and sold-out registrations, including the Guam Copa de Marianas, the Marianas Open Nagoya Pro in Japan, and the Marianas Open Manila Pro, which concluded just weeks ago with tremendous success and international participation.
While the Guam Marianas Open continues to expand internationally, organizers emphasize that the Guam Marianas Dumau represents a renewed investment into Guam itself — the birthplace and foundation of the organization.
“This tournament is about Guam,” said Steve Shimizu, President and Tournament Director of the Guam Marianas Open. “Over the years, we’ve watched the Guam Jiu-Jitsu community grow into something truly remarkable. The talent level continues to rise, and the support from families, coaches, academies, and the community has been incredible. Expanding the Guam Marianas Open series was the natural next step.”
Shimizu added that the Guam Marianas Dumau is designed to spotlight Guam’s local athletes while continuing to create opportunities for the next generation of competitors.
“The Guam Marianas Open was born on Guam, built on Guam, and continues to grow because of Guam,” Shimizu said. “As we continue expanding internationally, we also want to continue investing back into our local community. The Guam Marianas Dumau is for Guam’s current stars and future stars to shine. This is our show. This is our home.”
Already, international competitors have expressed interest in competing in the inaugural event, further highlighting Guam’s growing reputation within the global grappling community. However, organizers say the heart of the tournament remains centered around Guam’s athletes, academies, and culture.
Featuring both gi and no-gi divisions, the Guam Marianas Dumau is expected to deliver the same high-energy atmosphere, elite competition, and community pride that have become synonymous with Guam Marianas Open events.
