OCEANIA VOLLEYBALL HITS GUAM NEXT WEEK

For the first time ever, Guam will play host to the Oceania Volleyball Championship slated for next week, August 3-9.

Eight men’s and eight women’s teams from around the region will grace our island with some high-level volleyball.

Guam, Australia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Wallis Et Futuna and the Marshall Islands will all be passing, setting and spiking.

Not since the 1999 South Pacific Games has a collection of volleyball talent competed on Guam.

“Guam volleyball fans and athletes will experience six days of absolute elite indoor volleyball as our island hosts its first-ever Oceania Championships August 3-9^th,” Guam Volleyball Federation President Herman Ada said. “It’s been a long road to get Guam volleyball on the map within our region.”

“This level of elite indoor men’s/women’s volleyball which is typically seen during the Pacific Games is literally at our doorsteps,” GVBF Vice President Kaz Endo added. “If the question is ‘Can Guam be a great sports tourism destination?’ The answer is ‘yes’ – and it’s being proven by GVBF and OZVA.”

Action starts on Monday, August 3, at the UOG Calvo Field House and runs for the week (see schedule below).

According to Endo, the federation and its sponsors have invested nearly $100,000 into this historic, first-ever event on Guam.

“Financially – this is a big investment by all stakeholders – they include our federation (and its members) and governing bodies like AVC, OZVA and FIVB – but also great sponsors like: Ambros, Bank of Guam, GVB, Grandsports, PHR Hotels, UOG, and many more who’s helping to make this happen,” GVBF Secretary General Matt Limtiaco said.

Endo also mentioned that the local volleyball clubs are stepping up to assist in the logistics and operations of the tournament.

“All hands on deck,” Endo said. “Our clubs are coming together to throw Guam’s biggest indoor competition.

“Clubs make up the Federation and they are all stepping up. An event this big doesn’t happen in a vacuum and the board and I are grateful to our members. We hope everyone will be delighted and entertained,” said GVBF Public Information Officer Al Garrido.
