A brand new combative promotion is set to launch on July 2nd as Submission Fighter rolls out the mats with an impressive card.
Promoter Tony Borja presents a gi and no-gi submission only event at the FD Phoenix Center highlighted by a showdown between two of Guam’s best jui-jitsu practitioners Anthony Cruz vs. Javier Mirelez.
Cruz has been on a tear, winning every competition he enters in recent memory. He was the GSPN Athlete of the Year in 2019.
Other big names include former UFC fighters Trevin Jones and Roque Martinez along with some other high-level practitioners such as Oliver Cruz, John Meno, David Harris and Scotty Eclavea.
Borja has had his hand in six other combative events, but this is his first shot as the main man behind the plans.
He said that each match will be seven minutes long with a special sudden death format for the final matches.
“It’s something new to Guam,” Borja said. “The objective is to create some added excitement, without compromising the integrity of the fighters and the sport.”
UPDATE: a late announcement on Sunday pits MMA heavyweight champ Roque Martinez going up against Jose Cruz, former NAIA college wrestling champion. This should be a good one!
Fifteen total bouts are expected to get going at 2 pm on Sunday, July 2 at the FD Phoenix Center.
$15 general admission & $40 VIP mat side tickets are available for purchase online at www.eventbrite.com.
