ATHLETES BACK ON TRACK AFTER TYPHOON DELAY

JFK dominates Thursday track session

The ISA track and field season resumed in full stride this week as athletes returned to competition following a week delay caused by Super Typhoon Sinlaku. After a brief pause in the schedule, meet #4 brought out renewed energy to the track, showcasing another eventful evening featuring the GAA Angels, Okkodo Bulldogs, GW Geckos, and the JFK Islanders. The remaining teams are set to compete in the second half of the meet tomorrow.

Islanders Dominate Competition

Without a doubt, it was the Islanders who dominated the Thursday evening meet. From sprints to field events, the Islanders secured top finishes in more than half of the events across both the boys and girls divisions. On the girls side, the Islanders managed to take first place in 13/16 events, and for the boys, 8/16 events.

Wilson Leads Islander Girls

Leading the charge for the Islanders was senior standout Hazel Wilson. Competing in her final year for the green and gold, Wilson continues to chase excellence and push herself to the limit.

“Coming into today’s meet, it felt a little bit off because we just had a meet on Tuesday. But my goal was just to do my best with what events I’ve been given and push myself as hard as I can even if it’s not going to be a personal best, it’s what I’m doing my best at today,” said Wilson.

Wilson captured first place in every event she participated in this evening, including the 100-meter hurdles (17.64), 300-meter hurdles (50.90), high jump (1.27 m), and 200-meter dash (29.18). Despite the first-place finishes, Wilson felt that this performance tonight wasn’t one of her best and has room for improvement.

“You can’t have good days without having bad days, and today was one of the bad days for me. But it just makes those good days feel even better,” reflected Wilson.

Recently committing to compete at Westmont College in California, Wilson strives to add to an already decorated résumé. As the current national record holder in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, she now turns her focus toward pursuing the record in the 300-meter hurdles.

With momentum on the Islanders’ side and key athletes stepping up, including freshman Zahna Whitehead and senior Miachloe Decano, JFK has firmly established themselves as a team to watch as the ISA track and field season heads into its final stretch.
