HAZEL WILSON COMMITS TO RUN DII TRACK

In a ceremony held at the Leo Palace Resort, Guam national track and field athlete Hazel Wilson signed with Westmont College, committing to compete in NCAA Division II track and field.

Wilson signed the program’s Athletic Code of Conduct in front of family, friends, and coaches, officially beginning her next chapter with Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

A member of Guam’s national team, Wilson leaves the island as the record holder in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, having set a time of 15.78 seconds at the Oceania Cup in Tonga last November.

Though homeschooled, Wilson has trained and competed as part of athletic programs offered at St. John’s, George Washington, and John F. Kennedy, gaining experience from multiple coaching environments throughout her high school career.

Her path to Westmont developed over time. After initially receiving outreach from the program, she later solidified her interest following reports from family members on a trip sharing positive notes on their interactions with Westmont students who were coincidentally on the same boat conducting research. That led her to focusing her research on Westmont and later pursuing scholarship opportunities, ultimately earning both academic and athletic support before making her decision to sign.

Looking ahead, Wilson plans to major in environmental science. “Growing up on Guam, I am always surrounded by the ocean and by nature. I [have been] infatuated with the environment ever since I was young. Immediately, I knew that was something I wanted to study…”

As she prepares for the transition to collegiate athletics, Wilson said she hopes to “grow as an individual and as an athlete,” along with hitting new PRs on the way.

She also shared advice for her two younger sisters that should go for all upcoming athletes on Guam, saying, “Just do your best in all your sports…[and] have fun in what [you] do.”

With her signing complete, Wilson continues her journey from Guam to the collegiate stage, bringing her national experience and record-setting performance into the next level of competition.
