KNIGHTS OVERPOWER SHARKS

[sixcol_five_last]

By Nate San Nicolas

Behind the all-around play of Destiny Castro and Kali Benavente, the St. John’s Knights ousted the Simon Sanchez Sharks 53-29 on the road in their third game of the IIAAG girls high school basketball season.

From the start of the game, the freshman tag team wasted no time as Benavente scored the first bucket seconds after the tip. And with the help from Castro, the duo combined to score the Knight’s first fifteen points of the game. The sharks tried time after time in the first quarter to find a rhythm, but it was the superb defense by the Knights that made matters worse, as Castro recorded blocks serving as a force in the paint along with junior guard Niko Bulaon and Benavente racking up steals in the process.

Not willing to give up easily, the Sharks answered back in the 2nd Quarter with a 9-2 run led by an electrifying three-pointer by senior Kae’ana Camacho, bringing them within three. However, the two leading scorers from the Knights refused to let up, as Benavente recorded four assists in the second quarter, all to Castro. And not feeling she’s done enough, Destiny sinks a long three pointer at the buzzer to end the first half.

After the half, the Sharks were still relentless to giving in, as Shaniah Aguon tried to rally her team together scoring nine points in the second half. However, despite the hard earned effort, with costly turnovers and time running out, the Knights secured another win.

The Knights hope to continue this winning streak, as their leading scorer, Destiny commented, “As a team, we need to continue playing together, working hard, and just doing our best.” With this mindset, know the Knights are a team the league should look out for.

In the hard fought game, Castro led the Knights with 28 points, as teammates Benavente and Allyson Chiu contributed with 14 and nine points, respectively. Shaniah Aguon led the Sharks with 12 points of her own.
