A’S TAKE GAME ONE

[sixcol_five_last]

PRESS RELEASE – Northern A’s 2 Chalan Pago Amigos 0

FABL-page-001Budweiser King of the Diamond Championship Series kicked off with game one this Sunday 6pm at Leo Palace Resort with the Northern A’s and Chalan Pago Amigos matching up in the best of 3 series.

The Northern A’s took home field advantage making it through the 16 team tournament undefeated at 4-0.  The Amigos were 4-1 in the playoffs dropping their lone game to the A’s 10-5 in the semifinal winner bracket game.

With starting pitchers Florencio Binuya for the Amigos and Jesse Miner Jr for the A’s this was expected to be a low scoring pitchers duel, and it was.  Binuya and Miner Jr would match each other frame by frame with Miner Jr losing his no hitter in the 5th inning and Binuya in the 6th inning.  The A’s would take advantage of a couple Amigos defense miscues to push 2 runs across and Miner would do the rest leading the A’s to a 2-0 win and 1-0 lead in the best of 3 Championship Series.

Johnny Aguon would make it to second on a Amigos error with two outs and hustle in to score as Daniel Cruz reached on another Amigos error.  These errors would come back to haunt the Amigos as Miner Jr stifled the Amigos offense and finally allowing a hit and a baserunner in the top of the 5th.  Amigo’s Pete Castro Jr would just miss a homerun and settle for a triple on a towering shot to center field that would short hop the wall at the 415 ft mark. Miner and the A’s would hold off the Amigos and maintain their 1-0 lead stranding Castro at 3rd.

The A’s would add insurance in the bottom of the 6th inning with Johnny Aguon breaking up Binuyas no hit bid with a clean single to center.  Daniel Cruz would follow with a single and come around to score on a wild pitch to give the A’s a 2-0 lead.

Miner would down the Amigos in order in the 7th and the A’s would take game one of the Budweiser Championship Series with a nail biter 2-0.

Miner notches the win and Strike Zone Player of the Game with a complete game allowing only 2 hits with 9 K’s.  Binuya is on the short end of a great game getting tabbed with the loss allowing only 3 hits and 0 earned runs with 12 K’s in the loss for the Amigos.

Catch game two of the Budweiser King of the Diamond Championship Series between the Amigos and A’s this Tues 7pm at Leo Palace Baseball Stadium.   Follow the game live with updates on Facebook/AmateurBaseball Guam.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
