In week two of the Budweiser Football League, the Angels, last season’s champions, came from behind to defeat the Islanders 28-6 Sunday at Eagle field.

The Islanders struck first blood in the second quarter, when running back Jerrick Abisia ran in for about a 10-yard touchdown that had the Islanders side jumping out of their seats.

With less than a minute left in the first half, Angels quarterback Stephen “SP” Phillips connected with wide receiver Issu Mendiola that put the Angels at the three-yard line. In the ensuing play, Phillips tied the game at six apiece on a three-yard quarterback keeper. Ryan Bigler then stomped into the end zone for the two-point conversion, giving the Angels the 8-6 lead.

The Angels cemented their lead in the second half, scoring three touchdowns.

For their first score of the second half, full back Chris Quenga flipped into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown. Bigler then ran in for his second two-point conversion, making the score 16-6.

In the fourth quarter, Angels’ Derrick Haynes ran into the end zone for what would have been a one-yard touchdown, however, a penalty on the offense called back the touchdown. Teammate Mike Pangelinan then followed with an 11-yard rushing touchdown, making the score 22-6. With 37 second left in the game, Haynes rushed in for a five-yard touchdown for the final score of the game.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
