IIAAGG FOOTBALL WEEK 1 REVIEW

IIAGG Football Review Week One

  • For the first time in recent memory, two games were canceled during opening weekend. Southern Dolphins, with only six players, forfeited against the GW Geckos. I personally would have liked to have seen a six-man football exhibition between Southern and GW. I don’t know if it would be as exciting as this game:
  • The Sanchez Sharks had only 16 players or less coming to practice. The Sharks could have played the Panthers. I don’t think the coaches were 100% ready for Guam High. Instead, Guam High had a scrimmage and LJ Aguon led the offense with two scores. I don’t think the Sharks will salvage the season and will field a team against Okkodo for the Battle of Yigo vs. Dededo. Look for Dondre Barnes and Calvin Muna to put on some offensive fireworks. Both the Bulldogs and Sharks defense will have a handful of returning all-island players.
  • Southern has the week off and possibly the whole season. 1,547 students and six only showing up for practice.  My prayers are with you Coach Rios and Terlaje. Time for some inspiration. Shout out to Dolphin Girls Volleyball winning first game!
  • Okkodo and JFK turned out to be the showcase game of the week. Jarred Hernden showed his all around game scoring two touchdowns in JFK 14-6 win. Quintin Iriarte looks to be the starting quarterback over CJ Etse at this point. Alan Pinkine is a solid returner and receiver. The JFK defense held ground when it counted. Okkodo’s Calvin Muna returned with one touchdown and will be key in Okkodo’s season. Santos, Muna, and Sanchez are all key players in the Bulldogs defense. Joseph De Leon Guerrero is the new starting QB for Okkodo.

Week 2 Predictions

  • Okkodo Bulldogs’ Calvin Muna deflected the tackle by the incoming JFK Islander defender. (photo by Jesse Castro)

Okkodo vs. Sanchez Prediction – Two teams come in desperate for a win. Sanchez usually puts it on Okkodo. I think this game is going to be close because of Sanchez lack of depth at this point. I will still pick the Sharks 28-21. Look for Barnes to put up big numbers.

  • JFK vs. FD Prediction – JFK has already shown tremendous improvement from last year. The islanders will be competitive and push the friars for the first half. The Friars will make adjustments and just are a deeper team. I pick FD 35-21.
  • Guam High vs. GW Prediction – I don’t think this game will be forfeited. A rematch of last year’s playoff semifinals. Both teams are stacked on both sides. Since 2010 these two are even at 3-3 in the series. Expect a close one; I still pick Guam High 17-14.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
