PRESS RELEASE – Jim Pinaula left no doubt who was senior king of the lanes this month by finishing the championship game with seven strikes in a row to overcome a 28 pin handicap and the June Senior Bowler of the Month tile over 2nd seed Patricia Roberto.
The lane pattern was a bit better than last month as Roque Mendiola took the 1st seed in the 6 game qualifying rounds with a 209 average. Pinaula had to make his title run from the 6th place slot going into the shootout rounds.
8th seed Rudy Palaganas opened the shootout rounds by slipping by 9th seed Rick Ada Sr. and 10th seed Edgar Cooper. Pinaula romped over 5th seed Rick Torres and 7th seed Buddy Saludo in the other bracket.
In the quarterfinals, Pinaula continued with a win over 4th seed and last month’s champion Bart Lanada 224-165. 3rd seed Terry Roberto stopped Palaganas 230-173 with handicap in the other bracket.
An all sister-in law match ensued in the first bracket of the semifinals as 2nd seed Patricia Roberto stopped Terry Roberto 250-174. Pinaula continued by upsetting top seed Roque Mendiola with a close win 205-213 to set up the championship Final with Pinaula.
The championship game looked like it would go to Pat Roberto, as Pinaula could not convert a split in the second frame while Roberto opened the first three frames with a strike and two spares. But Pinaula took advantage of an open frame in 4th by Roberto and never looked back as he marked the rest of the way en route to a 232-193 win for the June title and a cash prize. The win also ensured Pinaula a slot in the December finals.
The next senior tournament will be 11:00 AM, July 28th at Central Lanes. This tournament is open to all male senior bowlers aged 50 or will be 50 this year.
