2024 GNYFF SEASON KICKS OFF

Opening day for youth football on Guam!

By Jay Leon Guerrero

After ending their season in third place last year, the Packers are looking at making a run for the Manha Division (7-9 years old) Guam National Youth Football Federation’s (GNYFF) title.

So far, they are off to a good start after defeating the Steelers 26-0 at the Steelers’ home field in Tamuning.

Daevin Ray Cruz rushed for two touchdowns and 90 yards in the first half to put the Packers up 20-0 by halftime.

Connor Hattori had a 32-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to secure a 20-0 lead by halftime for the Packers. Jahziah Somol scored an insurance 32-yard rushing touchdown in the second half to clinch the victory for the Packers.

The Packer defense was anchored by Jeremiah Kelly, who had a sack and an interception to keep the driving Steelers out of the end zone.

Kelly said he saw a pass play on defense and was at the right place at the right time. “I just saw the ball in the air, and I just went for it,” said Kelly.

Jeremiah Kelly and Cruz are both returnees and look to bring their experience from last season to help the Packers achieve their goal of getting to the championship game.

The Steelers had a good drive going to start the second half with Melvin Kelly bulldozing his way to a 26-yard run. Unfortunately, a holding penalty by the Steelers had the play called back.

Melvin Kelly led the Steelers in rush yards with 24 total yards on the ground, Courage Ezra ran for 17 yards.

Roman Smith led the Steelers on defense with three tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Packers look to make a run for the title
Cruz said the main goal is to have fun this season, but he also wants to win in the process. “If there’s one team I’m looking forward to playing – it has to be the Angels,” said Cruz. Cruz said the Angels are a great team, and his team will look forward to having a great game against them.

The GNYFF season continues all weekend long with 9 teams participating all summer.
