BEACH VOLLEYBALL ALL-ISLAND TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY

a day filled with action on the sand courts

By Carmen Gogue

The IIAAG All-Island Beach Volleyball Tournament commenced Sunday at Dungca’s Beach in Tamuning. The Boys division set off today with eight total matches scheduled and the Girls division begins Monday the 19th. The tournament will run all the way to March 4th for the Boys division and March 12th for the Girls division.

Featured Match

In our featured match of the day, FD’s Xavier Calvo and Steffen Surban defeated Knathan Davis and Elijah Dewan of the St. John’s Knights in two sets 21-17 and 21-9.

Davis and Dewan opened the first set on a 5-0 lead for the Knights until Calvo set up Surban for a kill right inside the sideline putting FD on the scoreboard 5-1.

With the Knights scoring another point, it was time for the seventh point switch of sides. The Knights continued to control the set with the help of service and spike errors from the Friars to lead 10-4 for the next switch of sides.

Calvo and Surban were able to find their chemistry and win rallies to close the Knights lead 11-9 at the third sides switch.

The Friars kept pace with the Knights tying the set at 14-14 before switching sides. As the two pairs battled to be the first to 21 points, the Friars were able to finish the first set out 21-17.

Despite the effects of the heat and blaring sun, Calvo and Surban worked together more efficiently in the second set. A few aces, and untouched kills combined with the Knights errors earned the Friars the match win 21-9.
