KNAPP KNOCKS OUT CANCER, STARS IN TOP CALI TEAM

Aaron Knapp quarterbacks St. Francis Lancers, two years after battling cancer

By Shania Bulala

St. Francis High School in San Jose, California is renowned for producing exceptional athletes, and this season, its football team is led by a player whose strength of character is as impressive as his skill. Aaron Knapp has earned the starting quarterback position for the St. Francis Lancers and now serves as a leader in one of California’s most prestigious high school football programs after overcoming a battle with cancer.

Aaron’s football journey began at a young age, playing flag football under the guidance of his father, Brandon Knapp – a 1994 graduate of Father Dueñas Memorial School. Aaron eventually transitioned to tackle football, and now, in his senior year, he holds the starting quarterback position on the varsity squad. However, his path to this achievement was far from typical.

Diagnosed with cancer his sophomore year after finding a bump on his neck, Aaron endured nine weeks of intense chemotherapy during the offseason.

“It was a long process, but it definitely taught me a lot about resilience and stuff that I can use out on the field,” Aaron reflects, emphasizing the inner strength he developed throughout his battle with cancer.

Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Aaron’s spirit never wavered. His determination to return to the game motivated him throughout his recovery. “There was never a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t get back onto the football field. I just knew that whatever was to happen was God’s plan,” he adds.
While Aaron never doubted his return, he did wonder when he’d be able to perform at full speed again.

“I knew I’d get back on the field, but I definitely had moments where I thought about how soon I could be at my best and ready for the upcoming season.”

After getting the green light to return to play, he committed himself to training and ultimately earned the starting quarterback position for the Lancers. In his return to the gridiron, Aaron wasn’t just playing to win games – he was fulfilling a promise to himself to seize every opportunity.

“It was a super happy moment for my family and me… I am incredibly blessed to be part of this team and this program. We all support each other no matter what the circumstances may be. The adversity everyone on the team has faced has really strengthened our bond. Brotherhood through adversity has truly been our strength this season.”

Aaron credits his family and church for their unwavering support throughout his journey, standing by his side every step of the way as he made his return to the field. “My mom was very happy when I got the clearance to play again. She puts in a lot of time and effort for me to be healthy, so seeing her happy was the most relieving thing for me,” he gratefully expressed.

Legacy of Hard Work: Following his father’s footsteps
Aaron’s remarkable story is made even richer by his roots in Guam. His father, Brandon Knapp, FD class of 94, was an early trailblazer for Guam athletes, among the first to go on to play collegiate football. Known for his talent and ability to represent Guam at the next level, Brandon went on to play for San Jose State University, where he earned a degree in accounting before establishing his life in California. Brandon’s legacy has clearly influenced Aaron, who carries his father’s work ethic, drive, and love for football.

“My dad is the most humble person I know. He really didn’t tell me much about his success growing up… I mostly heard about it when I visited Guam or when family or friends mentioned it. He’s really my football idol, and I plan to follow in his footsteps,” Aaron said. “Visiting Guam is always super special for my family and I. My dad would always tell me about the support from the island, especially from his parents, who made so many sacrifices for him to have a chance at being successful. ”

Aaron’s resilience, passion, and leadership have made him a player to watch out for. He hopes to guide his team to a state championship and plans to move further his career by playing collegiate football. He currently has a D2 offer but is determined to play D1.

Advice for Aspiring Guam Athletes
When asked what advice the father-son duo would give to athletes on Guam aspiring to reach the next level, Aaron says, “One thing my dad’s generation didn’t have was social media. It’s a huge platform athletes utilize now for exposure. To Guam athletes in all sports, use social media to your advantage and keep promoting yourself.”

Brandon adds, “There is nothing that can beat hard work. You need to outwork everybody. On top of hard work, you need to surround yourself with the right people. You need to be around top-notch people that want the same thing for you.”

To many, Aaron is not just a quarterback – he’s an inspiration, and his story is a reminder that true champions are defined by their ability to rise above unexpected challenges they may face. As he continues to lead St. Francis through a promising season, Aaron’s story serves as a beacon of hope, courage, and resilience for young people determined to pursue their dreams.

NOTES: Aaron’s grandmother, Teri Knapp, is the founder of S.K.I.P. Entertainer and his uncle Chad Knapp is a position coach for the 9-time champion FD Friars.
