BASEBALL ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

Baden gets bronze in women’s 800m

Guam’s men’s baseball team is back in the gold medal game in the Pacific Mini Games after handling FSM 10-6 Saturday afternoon in Palau.

The win gives Guam a 3-1 pool play record, good enough for either the 1st or 2nd seed and a spot in the gold medal game on Tuesday, 3 pm (4 pm Guam time). The winner of the Palau/CNMI game on Sunday at 7 pm will advance to face Guam for the gold as both teams are 2-1.

BASEBALL

Guam jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings as the red-hot John Salas stroked a two-run single in the first. Salas went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to lead Guam’s offense. For the tournament, he is batting 7-for-12 with 9 RBI.

Guam scored four more in the 5th inning for a commanding 8-1 lead behind RBI singles by Ricky Leon Guerrero and Guifon Terlaje.

FSM walked eight batters and committed four errors as Guam took full advantage of those costly mistakes.

Salas and Terlaje had two hits apiece as part of eight team hits on the day.

Javier Concepcion pitched five innings for the win, giving up two runs on three hits after 84 pitches.

“We got the important win to give us a chance at the gold,” manager Joe Tuquero said. “We will practice for the next two days to stay loose and will also rest up to hopefully stay healthy for the final game and also relax and support Guam in other sports.”

SOFTBALL

Guam vs Palau was postponed due to rain and hopes to be played on Sunday at 1 pm.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Our women’s team of Austia Mendiola/Kirsten Serrano remain unbeaten and move on to the semifinals. They beat Fiji 21-17, 21-16 to get into the medal round that will be either Monday or Tuesday.

The men’s squad of Ryan Eugenio/Kana Sgambelluri beat Nauru 21-12, 21-17 in the morning, but fell to Tahiti late in the afternoon. The best they can finish is 5th.
