It was business as usual as the FD Friars aim for their 10th straight high school football title, dominating the JFK Islanders 54-0 Saturday night on opening weekend of the 2025 ISA High School Football League.
Cruising in now is what an 82-game win streak, the Friars went about their usual business in the same fashion they’ve done so for the past decade.
“It’s an energy booster to get the season started,” said junior running back Brock Aguon, who scored two of FD’s five rushing touchdowns. “All the hard work we put in over the summer pays off. It’s an uphill battle from here.”
Despite losing nine defensive starters to graduation from a year ago, the Friars defense put up yet another monster performance, pushing back the JFK offense to minus-70 total yards.
“Even though we have a pretty good defense, there’s still a lot of work to go,” senior defensive lineman Joevince Meno said. “It was a pretty good game today. We communicated good and did good today. We dogs.”
Meno and linebacker Mason Whitaker are the only defensive returnees from the 2024 squad.
On the offensive side, the Friars O-line is completely new. They, however, kept their quarterbacks nice and clean, while returning running backs Javin Meno and Aguon did most of the damage.
Meno (5 carries, 42 yards) scored the Friars’ first touchdown of the season on a 2-yarder on the opening drive. Aguon (5 carries, 27 yards) had his two scoring runs in the first and third quarters.
FD systematically took apart the smaller JFK team and never really put the pedal to the metal.
On the defensive side, the Friars had two scores with Isiah Salas recovering a fumble in the endzone in the first quarter that made it 21-0. Joevince Meno scooped up a late fumble from three yards out that sealed the scoring at 54-0.
FD starting quarterback Kaynin McIntosh started out hot, completing his first six passes. He finished 9-13-0 95 yards. Backup QB Kaizayuh Flores rushed for a 5-yard sweep and later found Jarret Ko on a beautiful fade pass to the left corner late in the 3rd quarter.
The struggle was real on the JFK side as only eight of their 24 offensive plays went for positive yards. The longest play was a 7-yard barrel up the gut by offensive lineman Eric Fejeran, which took half the FD defense to get him down.
The Islanders have time to regroup with a Week 2 bye. The Friars will take on the Sanchez Sharks next Saturday night at the GW field.
