SABLAN ENDS COLLEGE CAREER, MAY CONTINUE WITH TEAM GUAM

Silver medalist takes aim at financing

By Patrick Lujan

After a silver medal performance in Palau’s Pacific Mini Games a month ago, Guam women’s softball 1st baseman Giana Sablan is heading toward a new course in life.

Sablan started playing tee ball since she was 8 years old, helped lead the Academy Cougars to the 2021 championship, was named First Team All-Island in her junior and senior high school seasons, played college ball at Howard Community College in Maryland and culminated with a silver medal with Team Guam in Palau.

Now that she heads back to college, she says it’s time to put the glove and bat down for competitive softball for the time being as she transfers to the University of Maryland.

“I’ve decided to not continue playing softball at a collegiate level so I can focus more on school,” Sablan said. “I am open to playing club softball or even an outside league. Depends on what’s offered in my area.”

After playing all four high school years at Academy, Sablan excelled at HCC, leading the team in batting her freshman season (.427), on her way to a 2nd Team All-Maryland JUCO selection. Her sophomore season still resulted in a respectable .308 batting season.

As for her future in the sport, it all depends on her educational and professional career as she seeks a degree in finance.

“I don’t know what my career will be like yet. I think if I had the opportunity again to represent Guam, I would,” said the 19-year-old. “It really depends on when I will be back on island again.”
