Field position was a friendly assistance to the Sanchez Sharks picking up their first win in the 2025 ISA High School Football League as they shut down the Okkodo Bulldogs 19-0 on Homecoming night at the JFK Field Saturday.
The Sharks pinned the Bulldogs back against their side of the field while starting their first six possessions in Okkodo territory, while scoring all their points in the second quarter to get a much-needed boost after starting the season 0-2.
“Man, this is big because our first two games, we started with Os,” said senior leader Allen Toves, who had a highlight game with a rushing touchdown, returned a blocked punt for a score, a sack and fumble recovery. “Come this third game, I’m proud to say that our Sharks, we’re still here and we’re still standing. I’m proud of my boys and I’m proud of this team.”
After a quiet and relatively competitive 1st quarter, the Sharks finally hit paydirt when Toves barreled in from short distance for the offensive score for Sanchez on the season.
On the next possession, Jake Masga blocked an Okkodo punt deep in Bulldogs territory and Toves was in the right vicinity to scoop it up for the easy score.
Sanchez sealed the scoring right before halftime when quarterback Jayson Parr went deep to Isaac Amaguin, who got behind the Okkodo secondary and sprinted in for the 43-yard score.
The second half was uneventful for both teams.
“For our first two games being against the top half teams from last year really put the pressure on the kids. This win gave the athletes the confidence they needed,” said 1st-year Sanchez coach Nik Masnayon. “We tend to ride this win into next week against last year’s runners up. We’re all learning from each other as a whole, from coach to coach, coach to players, and players to players. Once we learn how we can operate as a whole I feel like we can be able to compete on a higher level come future games. Hats off to Okkodo for playing hard tonight and not quitting.”
Halftime Honors
The Sanchez student body came in big numbers for Homecoming, giving the team an extra boost with loud cheering and music. The cheerleading squad and a student-based dance group entertained at halftime.
Former Sanchez coach Jimmy Naholowaa was presented a #50 jersey by the new coaching staff, honoring the coach for 50 years of coaching football on island.
