VILLEGAS, LEON GUERRERO LIFT MOST IN HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING

3rd Annual High School Powerlifting Showdown

By Jay Leon Guerrero

The 3rd annual GSPN and Trenheads High School Powerlifting event took place Saturday at Customs Fitness in Agana.

High school powerlifters representing several different schools took the stage to showcase their hard work.

Jacob Villegas won the top male performer of the event with a total of 587.5 kilograms (KG). Villegas competed in the 82.5 KG division, accumulating 402.18 points for the three events: squat, bench, and dead lift.

Villegas squatted 220 KG, benched 127.5 KG, and recorded 240 KG in the dead lift to win top honors.

Caeley Leon Guerrero took home first place honors in the girls division.

Leon Guerrero, competing in the 65 KG division, recorded 115 KG in the squat, benched 70 KG, and 110 KG in the dead lift for a total of 295 KG. Her point total was 322.01 to take home the top female performer award.

“The training leading up this involved pushing myself to become better. I focused on the areas I needed to improve to perform well at this meet,” said Leon Guerrero.

“I really appreciate all the organizers for putting up events like this for all athletes in our sport,” said Leon Guerrero. “These events help us gain the experience we can use to represent Guam overseas.”

“This is my last year to compete in this event,” said St Paul Christian School senior Kyle Villa. ” I’m thankful for all the organizers for putting this together. My goal was to just come out and enjoy it,” said Villa.

Villa, competing in the 110 KG division, recorded the heaviest numbers squatting 250 KG, benching 130 KG, and had 250 KG in the dead lift for a total of 630 KG.

JFK freshman Nathan Quitugua is new to the stage but relies on his faith in God and his coaches to help calm the nerves before every event. “This is my first meet, so I’m very excited and nervous at the same time,” said Quitugua.

The hardworking volunteer crew made the event successful.
