The Islanders and the Eagles faced off at Eagle Field Sunday afternoon in their first game of the 2012 Budweiser Football League. After three hours and four quarters of play, the Eagles blanked the Islanders 30-0 in the league’s second season.
The Islanders saw first offensive possession and began driving the ball down the field. Making it into the red zone, the Islanders were faced with a fourth and goal situation, however, an incomplete pass turned the ball over to the Eagles.
The Eagles punched in their first touchdown early in the second quarter when Joey Guerrero ran in for a one-yard touchdown.
After a turnover on downs for the Islanders, Eagles’ Xavier Reyes ran the ball down the field, converting two first downs along the way. A short pitch at the one-yard line from Joseph Terlaje to Reyes gave the Eagles their second touchdown of the game late in the second quarter.
“I feel that our team did pretty good. I did pretty good only due to my offensive line. All the touchdowns and yardage that I get, I get because of my offensive line,” said Reyes, who’s running game proved to be essential for the Eagles.
With less than a minute left on the clock, the Eagles were forced into a punt situation. Back to receive for the Islanders was Benjamin Cruz, who caught the kick at the five-yard line. The quick defense of Eagles’ Frank Fernandez tackled Benjamin Cruz at the one-yard line and forced a fumble. The Eagles recovered the loose ball and a play later, Reyes hit pay dirt again, putting his Eagles up 18-0.
In the ensuing kickoff, the Islanders’ Jerome Cruz and Vince Espinal were set to receive. Jerome Cruz was unable to make the catch and could not get a hold of the bouncing ball; Espinal then took it himself, but to his dismay, Eagles’ Oren Long stripped the ball right out of his hands at the ten-yard line. With 53 seconds left on the clock, Long tried to run in another touchdown, but two downs later, the halftime whistle was blown.

The third and fourth quarter saw two more Mateo Matanane quarterback sneaks into the end zone for the Eagles’ final touchdowns.
The Islanders’ Angelo Pereira grabbed an interception in their end zone and returned it the 40-yard line, but the Islanders were unable to convert it into points.
“There’s a lot of competition out there. The Islanders came out pretty strong, there’s gonna be a lot of competition this season, so its going to be an exciting season,” said Reyes.
