The Sanchez Sharks defense usually makes the headlines this season but their offense proved they can be just as dominant by defeating the JFK Islanders 34-0.
The Sharks improve to 4-1 while handing the Islanders (0-4) their fourth straight loss of the season. The Sharks allowed only one touchdown all season which was against the GH Panthers, a game in which they lost 6-2 proving to be their only loss of the season as well.
While only leading 12-0 at the half, the Sharks found their offensive groove in the second half as they put up 22 points while not allowing the Islanders to get any type of offensive rhythm going.
“We try and teach these kids basic principles on defense. JFK came out different and we got shutdown on offense and defense so we needed to come out of halftime and get things going,” stated Sharks assistant coach Mike Robang.
Sharks’ Johnny Cruz-Aguon scored on a 30+ yard TD run after a great defensive stand to push the lead to 20-0 after a two-point conversion. Cruz-Aguon also scored the teams first touchdown giving him two for the game.
“We did our jobs today and we just need to continue blocking well. Our offense has been doing well, we just need work on minor things like blocking on the right side,” stated Cruz-Aguon.

The Sharks added two more scores in the fourth quarter off a short catch and run by receiver Mark Evangelista and a trick play that gave quarterback Shawn Dumansi a free lane to the end zone. The Islanders got within 30 yards of the Sharks’ end zone late in the fourth quarter but the offense fumbled their chance to score which ended the game.
The Islanders could not get the ground game going due to the high pursuit on all of their ball carriers by the menacing Sharks defense. Not even the air game worked as Sharks defenders seemed to be all over the field shutting out an opponent for the second straight week.
The Sharks have a tough challenge in their last game of the season next Friday as they travel to GW for a showdown with the Geckos (2-2). The Sharks’ defense will get their final test against the Geckos’ offense who was shutout against the Bulldogs.
The Islanders and Southern Dolphins (0-4) have had forgettable seasons thus far and both teams will meet next weekend while each compete for their first win.
Panthers 28, Kubasaki 12
First win for Guam High against a DODDS Pacific opponent in nine tries, and first win in five tries off-island. L.J. Aguon rushed for two touchdowns and ran for a third, and Josh Foronda scooped and scored from 42 yards out with a fumble. Panthers improve to a Pacific-best 5-0 this season.
