In Day 8 of the FD Alumni Basketball Tournament, Class of 1999 showed that they are still in their prime after defeating the combined team of 2000 and 2005, 53-35 Friday night at the Jungle.
99’s Johnny Holbrom got things going for his class scoring the first five buckets within the first five minutes of the half. Holbrom’s enthusiasm sparked ’99 to take control early as William Valencio and Steve Kim contributed six points each in the first half as 99 quickly had a ten point lead midway through the first quarter at 22-11.
00/05 however did make a push nearing the end of the first half as Nick Santos drove to the lane on a couple of possessions scoring the acrobatic layups. However, Holbrom was on fire from downtown knocking down three 3-pointers. By half time 99 held on to a comfortable 29-19 lead.
It was more of the same in the second half as 99 kept the momentum going with good give and go passes which lead for easy scoring baskets. Kim seemed unstoppable in the paint scoring another six points in the second half.
00/05 tried to get things going in the second half, but came up a little short as 99 just had one of those nights where everything was going their way.
“Felt good to come out and represent with my class,” said Holbrom who had 15 points for 99, who are one of the last remaining undefeated teams in the tournament. Kim also contributed with 15 points, and Valencio racking up 12. Santos led 00/05 with 21 points.
