With both teams entering Saturday afternoon’s Budweiser Football League game winless, one side was going to go home happy campers.

The Steelers pulled away from the Islanders in the second half to take a 19-0 win on a cool afternoon at Eagle Field. Tyler Santos caught the go-ahead touchdown and intercepted a pass that set up another score to pace the Steelers.

Both teams counted on their ground game throughout the first half to try and establish control.

Late in the second quarter, the Steelers rode the shoulders of halfback Tom Medler with good field position and just a few minutes left on the clock.

Faced with a 4th-and-1 situation at the Islanders 15-yard line, the Steelers decided to go for it. Quarterback  Dontana Koraskes went for the end zone where receiver Tyler Santos outmuscled cornerback Clint Rosario to snag the pass and put the Steelers on the board with just six seconds remaining.

Coming out of a long halftime, the Islanders were determined to get things going with the first possession. However, a questionable decision to go for it on 4th-and-13 from their own 10-yard line backfired as an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the Steelers right on their front door.

Three running plays later, fullback Brandon Burgos snuck in right up the gut to stretch the lead to 13-0.

The Steelers put the game away in the fourth quarter after Santos picked off a Paul Unger pass, setting up his team for yet another scoring opportunity.

Running back Keanu Lujan didn’t waste any time on the very next play, taking a handoff right up the middle and scampering 29-yards untouched to put the game out of reach.

Medler was the workhorse for the Steelers with 20 carries and 78 yards while Lujan added 71 yards on nine carries as they improve to 1-3.

Fullback Vincent Pangelinan powered his way to 50 yards rushing on only five carries for the Islanders, who remain at the bottom of the standings at 0-4.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
