SURFERS HEADED TO JAPAN

[sixcol_five_last]

PRESS RELEASE – Two Guam junior surf athletes are heading to Wakayama in western Japan on June 12 to compete at the Isonoura Youth Surfing Contest. 15-year-old Jared Brandon Gogue and 17-year-old Christopher Perry will compete at the surfing competition, scheduled on Sunday, June 16, in the coastal town of Wakayama, near Osaka.

This is the third time that Guahan Napu Inc., the local non-profit association of surfers and body-boarders, is sending junior association members to participate in the competition. While this is Gogue’s third time at the Isonoura event, it will be Perry’s first time representing Guahan Napu and Guam. Perry placed third in this April’s Rick’s Reef Classic VI junior surfing division. He also competed in the gender neutral body-boarding open division. Gogue’s surfing record includes three first place titles in Rick’s Reef Classic junior surfing competitions in 2010, 2012 and 2013; first place finish in the 2010 Surf the Basin II junior division contest and third place overall when he first competed in the 2009 Isonoura Kids Surfing event.

“Surf conditions at Isonoura look very promising for the competition this coming weekend due to a storm forming north-west of Guam and forecast to head past Japan just prior to the contest,” says Willi Byerly, president of Guahan Napu association. Byerly said additional support for the duo’s trip to Japan was also made possible by the generosity of Lotus Surf Shop, Primo Surf and Tumon Bay Lobster and Grill.
