PRESS RELEASE – The Paintco Lady Strykers will face the undefeated Doosan Lady Crushers in the Bud Light Women’s 11-A-Side Soccer League season-ending showdown Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

Kimberly Sherman and Alexy Barbe scored in the Lady Strykers’ win over Quality Distributors in the league’s early evening semifinal match, while the winning team’s defense shut down Quality’s attackers, including league Golden Boot winner Kayla Kinney and last season’s Golden Boot winner Paige Surber.

Quality had several scoring chances during the match, including one on a Surber penalty kick early in the first half. Surber’s shot escaped the outstretched arms of Lady Strykers first half keeper Sonja Sanchez, but hit the crossbar and bounced out. Sanchez managed to catch the ball before Surber could take a follow-up shot.

Sherman later put the Lady Strykers on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute after pressing through the Quality left-side defense and finding space for a shot. About 15 minutes later, Sherman made a clever run up the left side and sent in a cross that found Barbe for the finish and the eventual final score.

Quality’s finishing woes continued through the match, with a few other opportunities hitting the crossbar or goal post. Lady Strykers’ second-half goalkeeper, Gesualda Gonzalez, saved other shots on goal in the deciding half to keep the clean sheet for her team.

In the evening’s late semifinal match, the Lady Crushers continued its undefeated streak with a 3-0 win over the Lady Rovers. Lady Crushers’ striker Skyylerblu Johnson, who will be just 14 years old later this month, opened scoring for her team in the 16th minute of play. Less than ten minutes later, Colleen Naden launched a perfectly arched shot from the right side to the opposite post over Rovers first-half keeper Cara Walsh for the two-goal advantage.

The Lady Rovers had chances later in the half, including one opportunity on a corner kick play. After the Lady Crushers’ Kaeliana Taitano denied the Lady Rovers’ Rhoda Bamba on a header, Bamba’s teammate Niki Perkins followed up with a high shot on goal. Luckily for the Lady Crushers, the shot was in keeper Mya Sanchez’s reach as she leaped to catch the ball right on the goal line.

The Lady Rovers limited speedy second-half plays by the young Lady Crushers team with its short passing game, but another goal in the final minute by Naden quelled the Lady Rovers’ momentum.

The Lady Rovers will play against Quality Distributors for the league’s third-place spot Sunday at 5 p.m. before the championship match between the Lady Strykers and the Lady Crushers. There is no admission fee to watch the matches.
