Guam smashes in Day 1 of the U19 Oceania Basketball Championships in Fiji.

DAY 1

Destiny Castro puts on a clinic with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as Guam dismantles Papua New Guinea 80-46 to open the tournament. 13-year-old Mia San Nicolas, the tallest player on Team Guam, debuts with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

All five PNG starters play the entire game led by Maimu Kala’s 29 points. Guam outrebounds PNG 55-32 and forces 28 turnovers from their opponents.

In the men’s division, Guam totally outmatched the Solomon Islands, leading 48-0 at halftime on their way to an 88-13 win.

The Solomons shot 5-for-43 from the field (12%) as they faced the traditionally-daunting Guam defense.

Point guard and former IIAAG MVP Kurtis Silva led the way with 18 points while team captain Jeddou Antonio added 14 points. Harvest star Kobe Sotelo pumped in 12 points and four steals.

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
