2014 GUAM FOOTBALL YEAR IN REVIEW

GSPN takes one final look back on the year of 2014 with a quick recap of everything football!

January

• The Raiders finished undefeated in the Budweiser Football League at 6-0 and were crowned League champions.

• We learned that Roque Martinez is the biggest Seahawks fan on Guam.

• Pia Gillan instantly became the biggest sports story in GSPN for 2014. (and still is)

• Seahawks eliminate 49ers in NFC Championship.

• Florida State beats Auburn in last BCS Championship.

February

• The Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl.

• Team Budweiser beats Team Bud Light 6-0 in the BFL All Star Game.

• Three former Guam residents choose to play football in college. Matthew Eaton (Temple), Brandon Finona-Gardener (Chadron State), and Kenyan Coker (Graceland).

• Will Williams joins semi-pro football team the San Diego Stallions

March

• The DLX Knights pick up their first win in four seasons over the Car Plus Rams.

• Guam Team Legacy defeats Japan’s Blaze Cats 18-7 in a goodwill women’s football match.

April

• The Pepsi Warriors finish regular season undefeated in MFL.

• Team Legacy defeats the Steel Blazers 8-6 in a battle of unbeaten.

• Ryan Rios is still the Chairman of the Board.

May

• The Pepsi Warriors win 26-0 over IP&E Angels, winning back to back championships, and finish undefeated. The winning head coach was Loring Cruz, who also retired after serving many years as an educator at GW.

• Former NFL player and Coach Mike Singletary visits Guam to speak at St. Paul’s graduation.

• Guam born Josh Blaz is introduced as a football player to watch in the State of Virginia.

• Team Legacy’s Morgan Reyes wins Offensive MVP and Raider’s Tammy Guzman wins Defensive MVP.

• Team Legacy win 12-8 over Steel Blazers and clinch third straight title.

• Guam High football player Austy Hines wins 2014 Shieh Scholar Athlete.

June

• High school football conditioning starts in IIAGG

August

• Triple J to sponsor Guam National Youth Football Federation (GYNFF) through 2015.

• Isaiah Cruz plays in Polish Professional League.

• JFK defeats FD, Simon Sanchez beats Southern, and GW vs Okkodo is rained out opening weekend.

September

• The JFK Islanders start season 3-0 with 20-6 win over Sharks.

• GW beats JFK 14-0 and moves into 1st Place.

October

• GW defeats FD 19-0 and finishes regular season 5-0

• Southern wins first game in three seasons, beating Guam High 31-21.

• Okkodo defeats Sanchez 14-6 for the first time in school history.

• All Island Teams announced. GW’s Hank Sablan and Kelvin Hocog win MVPs.

• FD 41 Southern 6, JFK 21 Guam High 13, and Okkodo 22 Sanchez 0 in quarterfinals.

• FD 21 JFK 0 and GW 14 Okkodo 7 in semifinals.

• GW 13 FD 0 in final and wins Championship.

• Okkodo defeats JFK to win first ever 3rd place.

November

• Angels 26 Saints 7. Angels win 3rd straight Manha Championship.

• Cowboys 20 Saints 14. Cowboys win Metgot Championship.

• Angels 10 Saints 7. Angels win Matua Championship.

• QB/WR Tyler Okiyama finishes high school football career at Piner in Santa Rosa, California. He makes 2nd team all-county league at QB.

• Guam High WR Lewis Harris attracts interest of stateside colleges with his performance at the HFC Senior Bowl in Hawaii.

• Guam defeats Saipan in exhibition game.

December

• Jared Tajalle wins state title with the Allen Eagles.

• Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo leads the Midshipman to another win over Army and victory over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl.

• Zach Banner starts at Offensive Tackle for USC. The Trojans beat Nebraska 45-42 in the Holiday Bowl.

• Former JFK QB Quintin Iriarte starts training with Marcus Mariota’s high school QB mentor Tommy Passas in Hawaii. He almost threw with Marcus, but Mariota was spending time with family. We’ll give Marcus a pass and take the rain check. Go Ducks!

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Jeremiah Camacho shot a perfect game at the 48th Hong Kong Open. The 22-year-old Guam National Team Member shot his 18th career perfect game on lanes 1 and 2 at Top Bowl Lanes in Hong Kong.
