MASTERS BASEBALL OPENS 2015 SEASON

The 2015 Budweiser Masters Baseball League got underway Saturday night at the Paseo Stadium.

PRESS RELEASE – The Guam Masters Baseball Association (GMBA) got the 2015 Guam Budweiser Masters Baseball League (GBMBL) season underway this afternoon with the 14 teams gathering at Paseo Stadium for an Opening Ceremony. Representing Ambros, Inc., Mr. John Myers threw out the first pitch to start the season. The season opener followed at 6:00 p.m. when the MTM Falcons took on the Maimai Marlins.

The Falcons stayed in control throughout the game scoring two runs in the top of the second and four more in the top of the third. Maimai got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third scoring three runs to cut the lead to 6-3 after three complete. MTM added another run in the top of the fifth to lead 7-3 all the way till the bottom of the seventh. MTM reliever Jeff Muna held the Marlins scoreless in the bottom of the fifth and sixth but in the seventh; saw the game slip away.

With the bases loaded for Maimai, Pat Alvarez stroked a two-RBI double to left to make it 7-5 MTM.

With two outs and two on, Muna struck out Peter Aguon but the ball gets past MTM catcher Brian Lizama. Aguon races to first but Lizama’s throw to Candido Naputi sails over Naputi’s head and Aguon is safe. All the while Marlin runners on board race home to tie it up 7-7. Sean Earl then comes to the plate and hits the walk off single to right to bring Stan Blau home for the game winning RBI as the Marlins win the 2015 season opener, 8-7. Roke Munoz took the win while Muna suffered the loss.

In the nightcap, the Palau Masters defeated the Net Tours Jets, 17-12, in an offensive matchup. James George got the win on the mound for the Palau Masters, while Alex Roberts took the loss. Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
