BAIRD, RIOS GET MVP NODS FOR 2023 FOOTBALL

Panthers running back, Geckos linebacker named top players

Guam High junior running back Deshawn Baird and GW senior linebacker Rayce Rios were named Offensive and Defensive MVPs for the 2023 high school football season.

Baird rushed for over 1000 yards in just six games played while Rios led a steady Geckos defense that finished in third place.

All eight teams voted as well as media representatives from GSPN and PDN.

The two shocking picks were FD quarterback Alex Sojo and nose tackle Tristen Burgos not making First Team. Both players clearly played at a different level that need to be noticed.

QUICK HITS

The JFK Islanders won the first ever Memorial Weekend High School Basketball Tournament.

The All-Tournament selection were Zhion Macapinlac JFK, Darwin Ecijan JFK, Matthew Quinata Southern, and Malcom Fernandez Tiyan.

JFK’s Collin Rillamas was named tournament MVP.

The Prospects captured the Guam PONY Colt Spring Baseball League (14-16) championship Saturday with a masterful 2-0 win over the Smokies.
Pitchers Gavin Alcantara (5 innings) and Javier Taimanglo (2 innings) combined to throw a no-hitter.
Taimanglo and Juan Carlo Presnell drove in the two runs for the Prospects, and Skyler Paulino had two hits.
