Alex Sojo threw four touchdown passes to help the FD Friars defeat the JFK Islanders 40-0 in the ISA High School Football League. Both teams entered the contest undefeated, but it was the six-time defending champion Friars making a statement in Saturday’s game at the GW Field.
Sophomore receiver Trey Blas had a breakout game with 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, another FD underclassman stepped up with some key starters out with injuries. Freshman Jovince Meno led the team with six tackles (four for losses), a sack and a fumble recovery to keep the Islanders scoreless.
FD now improves to 3-0 for the season, and the winning streak is now 60 games in a row for head coach Bruce Meno.
The Friar Defense made key stops with JFK threatening to score. Caleb Murphy and Chase Artero forced fumbles, and Isaac Wessling had an interception for FD. Colin Ada and Isaiha Arriola also recorded sacks for FD.
Zach Muna and Lance Muna-Aguon scored touchdowns via Sojo passes in the third quarter. Koley Taitague scored in the fourth quarter to end the game at 40-0.
Sojo, FD’s Swiss army knife, also made two field goals from 20 and 16 yards out. Sojo also rushed four times for 47 yards. Jaron Meno accounted for 45 yards, and Zach Muna had 40 yards on the ground.
The Islanders got 50 total yards from Joshua Benavente. Benavente rushed for 32 yards and had an 18-yard pass reception from quarterback Noah Medler.
Pierce Pangelinan and Malcolm Lim each recorded six tackles for the Islanders. Jermaine Molo had a strip fumble and recovery for JFK.
JFK suffered their first loss of the season and will look to bounce back on Saturday versus the Okkodo Bulldogs at Ramsey Field.
Showdown next week
The Friars and the Guam High Panthers will face each other in a showdown next week Friday at Guam High. Both teams are 3-0, and the game will likely determine the top seed heading into the playoffs.
The Panthers had another convincing victory with a 60-0 win against the Tiyan Titans on Saturday night. Both teams are evenly matched, and the Panthers look to end the streak next week with an explosive offense.
